This is a design for a two-day music festival, 'A Gathering Of The Tribes', 6th-7th October, 1990, conceived and organized by Rick's friend, Ian Astbury of The Cult. This artwork was used for flyers, promotional and press packs and other materials. The central mandala design reflects the theme of the festival - diversity - and the bringing together of different races and musical cultures, such as Rap, Rock, Grunge and Folk. With assistance from promoter Bill Graham, the festival was held at two locations simultaneously, in San Francisco and Costa Mesa, California. It sold out and the much-publicized event spawned the Lollapalooza tour the following year. Rick's 1967 poster for the original 'A Gathering Of The Tribes For A Human Be-In' was the basis of this artwork, which incorporated Native American tribal imagery.
